Chapter Fourteen

“Nice to see you again, Miss Park. This shouldn’t take too long.” The executor, Judy Mossberg, held out her hand.

Eun shook hands. “Thank you for handling this so quickly.”

“Your father was very meticulous in his estate.” Judy frowned. “Your uncle made noises like he wanted to challenge his will.” She pushed her glasses up on her nose. “I assured him he would be wasting his time and money challenging it. Your father placed all his assets in a trust for you. It shelters you from taxes and is basically bulletproof to challenges. Your uncle can’t touch anything. I need your signature on a few documents, and then I will file it with the clerk of courts.”

She passed a large stack of documents to Eun. “I trust you had a chance to read over what I sent you. Will you want to read over them again before you sign?” She handed a thick black pen to Eun. “Would you like some coffee?”

“I’d like to review this again. I was a bit distracted when I was reading them in the hotel room.”

“Would you like some coffee?”

“Coffee would be great.” Eun took the documents and folded back the first cover sheet.

“Cream? Sugar?”

“No, thank you.”

Judy left the room and returned with a paper cup filled with coffee. She placed it in front of Eun. “I’ll leave you to it. My office is the first one on the left if you have any questions.”

The quiet tick of the electric clock on the wall was loud in the stillness of the conference room. Eun sipped her coffee as she read over the documents.

After half an hour, Judy returned. “Any questions?”

“It looks all in order.” Eun picked up the black pen to sign the documents. She worked her way through the pink sticky tabs marking each place she needed to sign. She signed her name on the final line. “Done.” She capped the pen.

The sound of a strident voice from the next room spilled over into the conference room.

Eun grit her teeth as she listened to her uncle harangue Judy’s office assistant, insisting he be let into the conference room.

Judy raised her eyebrow. “I thought we could avoid this by meeting early.”

Eun pursed her lips. “My uncle is a force of nature. It’s like trying to avoid an earthquake.” She pinched her nose. “It’s okay. Did my father leave anything to him?”

The executor held up a folder. “Not as much as he thought he was getting. Your father left him some cash.”

Eun drummed her fingers on the table. “Any chance there’s another way out of here?”

Judy pressed her lips together. “I’m sorry. No.”

The door to the conference room banged open.

Uncle Max strode into the room. “What is going on in here?”

Eun spun the pen on the table and fixed her uncle with a glare and waited. Don’t talk. Wait.

Judy squared her shoulders and straightened her posture. “We were, Mister Park, in the midst of finalizing the documents from your brother’s estate.”

“Stealing it. Stealing what was mine.” The pitch of her uncle’s voice climbed higher.
